cron for me is frustrating, need a better gui really to have true control of anything I would like, checkboxes and descriptions of each options would be ideal,. at least sysctl.conf way of setting some things is easy. cron is very confusing in how its set up.
I switched from Win 11 to the Ubuntu based Linuxmint 20.3. This was OK, but not quite OK ... minor incompatibilities. The I switched to LMDE 6, and now use it as my daily driver, both on my old HP desktop, and on my Lenovo laptop. Just repartitioned the drive to leave a small space for Win 11 .... just in case. Hardly ever look at Windows these days.
I use Mint too as my preferred distro. I got win 11 to run on a 4th gen I7 with a TPM module that cost £8. There were workarounds involved but It runs just fine. I dont know much about chips but apparently there is something wrong with older Intel chips that cannot be fixed and is a serious security risk. MS just doesnt want the pain of the 0.1% of users that could be hacked using the exploit in the Intel chips. Everyone with older hardware should go linux knowing there is a minuscule chance they could be hacked using the exploit. Lets face it there are so many ways you could be hacked anyway! So long as you dont do stupid stuff the exploit wont effect the vast majority of users.
The video did NOT find me well
It is mistaken to blame the GNU+Linux developers for Adobe not working, you should blame Adobe for not supporitng the OS.
17:23 That was to do with the fact that the mechanical arm on the spinning disk would access the end of the hard drive faster than the beginning. So I've heard. But if you are using SSD s then that is no longer relevant in today's age.
A thing I do is I like to symlink a bunch of directories in my home to another drive on the system. And I also have Downloads and .cache symlinked to a ramdisk, which I recommend doing
GNU+Linux
swap files is yes a great idea, however is a good idea still to, especially if you do have multiple SSD's USB 3.0 at least as well if enclosure. as well as external ones. use one for swap, use another for var i like doing that. I like to reduce multiple writes on one specific SSD if boot make that a focus, then if log aka /var again go to another, and make sure you have trim set up correctly.
Installing W11on unsupported hardware isn’t hard to accomplish. Plenty of videos that walk you through the process. Linux has become a solid choice if Microsoft Office or Adobe aren’t needed on the desktop
Just found one in the trash and it works perfect!
Yea Linux Mint has been for me weird too, especially the newer OSes. Im actually back on XUbuntu currently 18.04 and upgrading to 20.04
It's still got some room for improvement, but Linux has come a LONG way from when I first used it way back when redhat 5.2 was new, and you had to manually mount optical drives haha Hell, it's come a long way since even the days of my favorite Ununtu release, 10.04.
when did Shure close their doors i live a short distance from their factory in Evanston ,Ill
Pfanstiehl makes very good replacement styli for magnetic cartridges
I remember having a boot problem with Windows on a buggy Asus motherboard. It would boot from usb if you had the stick in a 2.0 slot. 3.0 slots wouldn't work. Repaired it that way. In the end I spent some money, got rid of the Asus board and bought an MSI. Now my workstation runs so smooth! Probably will install 11 next year. Using that for work, vmware, photgraphy and gaming. My laptop has Kubuntu installed though, using it for internet, email and office.
The perspective is, Windows made computing accessible, and easy, for the common, computer illiterate joe. There are still some programs that I use on Windows, that I can't find a substitute for, on Linux. That being said, Linux has come a long way, as far as ease of use goes. My favorite feature of Linux, bar none, is the live USB feature, which couldn't be duplicated with Windows.
I kinda agree with some Point from this Person. A lot of stuff is badly explained and it gets obvios If you have someone who explaints it bettet and also thinks it could be explained a lot bettet. But i think the biggest Problem is when people introduce Linux as a easy and always without Problems working Windows Alternative.
And Windows 11 (July 2024) is even far worse, especially as the want to put a spy on your computer in the name of Recall. Thank good I don't have to deal with it.
Nvtop is better for checking GPU performance
I find the Arch Wiki my goto for any Linux software or issues I'm facing. There is no better learning guide hands down. And it is all in one place. The issue with Ubuntu is that the documentation is so fragmented and often stale. I would only argue for it's use as a server, not a desktop.
I noticed that the 2004 CD's are becoming unglued.
What ? What do you mean ?
Yes, it still suck… except for geeks
I am a developer and I use Windows11 and Linux (Mint, Fedora) for productive work. The only real problem I see these days with Windows is still privacy and the fact that you are not controlling what's going on with your data and your machine. I never had any performance issues wth Windows or Linux. If you are aware of what you are doing, you can live in both worlds and use the tools provided there. Funny thing: I own a desktop computer (AMD Ryzen 5 PRO ) that does not like Linux Mint. No matter what I do, no matter how often or different I try to install Linux Mint, it just does not boot up. Every other Linux Distro (Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, etc) are working just fine. Anyway, thanks for the video, a pleasure hearing from you again. All the best.
Hi Jo, cool Story. I also experimented a while ago with Linux and had it installed beside Wincrab in a dual-boot system on an HDD. But a few days ago this MS-poo crashed from one second to the other and that made me so angry I hate that they want to install that Recall-Crab sooner or later also on an X86-CPU-based System. So I suddenly now have quitted that Bulls... and installed MX-Linux XFCE on my PC on the SSD where WinCrab was and Micodirt can kiss my ass from now on. I code and play on my Linux like never before, because it doesn't have tons of background processes like WinCrab, and literally everything works faster and so smoothly all the time I tortured myself with WinCrap due to the illusion this and that is not really performant and stable under Linux but I was totally wrong. I will never go back to WinCrab on my private computers. Linux RULES is KING for me and I AM Maste of my System, not MicroCrab anymore. Greetings from Peter from Germany and please excuse my English as I'm still learning. Thank you for that video and I hope you and your Son will have a lot of fun and success while using you PC's now.🤘
Linux has never sucked! Only incompetent users who have always sucked.
I switched to Linux Mint about 2 months ago, because Windows 11 isn't supporting my CPU. It hasn't been perfect (nothing in this life is), but dang it if it isn't close to perfect! I totally agree with you about Windows/Microsoft basically creating unnecessary e-waste by having such a hard cut off for system requirements. I hope more users switch over to save these computers.
I not only have my /home on a separate partition... it lives on a dedicated HDD... :-)
Mx linux and pop os are really easy to setup steam gaming also there is a command for windows pcs that will audit windows that i have used since the days of xp that will fix any corrupted file on windows and keep all data withouth format or reinstallation of windows
This review was done very well..... I have the Rainier on my Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo, and I am very happy with the sound. Not hearing the distortion or sibilance described here, with my current receiver and speaker config. I tend to swap turntables and speakers in my multiple systems. This might reveal the deficiencies you describe.... but for now, I'm loving the Rainier!!!
Thanks Joe, you are my Linux Godfather!
For nvidia gpus nvtop is a great package, like htop, to observe loads and temps on the dedicated graphics
Good to hear all is well with you! How about a refresher on your Back Up Tool. Got lazy for a while on updating LM versions, so now I am in update mode.
A good father helps his kids learn many lessons, big and small. I can tell you're a good dad, and I can't think of anything in life more important than that.
Someday take look at big linux
It seems that drivers are a challenge, regardless of the OS. But GNU Linux, I agree, has indeed come a long way. By coincidence, we're both running the same processor. By happenstance, the OS is Mint. FYI, MS Windows 10 can be removed from the internet via a simple network configuration change, and thus decluttered stays that way.
About 17:21 I think I heard a furious approaching crowd wailing "I use Arch, btw." Maybe I'm too debianized. I'll tell you when I see burning torches, sharpened scythes and funnily tied up ropes, anyway (And, no matter the noise, they have a nice lot of awesome documentation, "btw").
Ai Invasion of privacy- likely to increase Linux usage greatly over time.
the best documentation for linux is on the archwiki
Nope...Linux doesn't suck! It is still better than many versions of Win OS. Probably the best win was the NT 3.5...and or the XP professional. Since then....Window sucked...more and more. I am grateful I could discover Linux. Steep learning curve, but better than loosing data during" update"...just because In the end linux is running on 4 machines....and using it for 3D printing. ❤❤❤❤❤
The problem with Linux STILL IS, that it only allows and uses, a small subset of the mainstream software - all of which, pretty well runs on Windows.
Users do basic tasks. Cloud apps abound- including MS Office. Fewer and fewer reasons to use spyware.
You would think that the chances of getting MALWARE on an OPEN system is actually MUCH GREATER than closed operating systems. The fact that Linux is OPEN, means that a hacker has access to the entire code and can do all kinds of malicious things - rather easily!
please please, something without Bryan's shortsighted political ravings. he said he wouldn't, and yet he did.
Maybe the graphics setting was lower. But proton has progressed really far.
OEM install of windows has device encryption by default. But I don't think ebay sellers usually use OEM, apart from using the manufacturer's installer which may add encryption.
Your problem may have been MBR (you can tell, whether the BIOS has a secure boot option, then it _is UEFI_.
If you don't connect windows directly to the internet, it is usually fine (unless the wifi driver has an exploit.) Most up to date systems will evdn be ok if they are connected directly to the internet.
"The [distro with the] best documentation in the Linux community about Linux is Ubuntu" -- Arch left the chat "and Ubuntu when you first install it is lean and mean without a lot of extra things installed" I'm sorry are you trolling us? I avoid Ubuntu like the plague in favor of Mint and Arch because it's heavy, bloated and insisting on running bloated slow Snaps even for CORE packages! Mint nowadays is what Ubuntu should have been. Easy to set up, understandable for Windows users, compatible for the most part with Ubuntu, and no damn Snaps!
Just a pleasure to listen.
